Named after the Swedish botanist Dr Anders Dahl, dahlias are of the family Asteraceae, which is part of the daisy family. The flowers originated in the mountain ranges of Mexico, Guatelmala and Columbia, and are now popular throughout the world. Dahlias are a tuberous-rooted perennial plant and is characterised by different flower types over around 30 species. Some tall varieties can grow as high as 1.8 metres and require staking for protection. Dahlias begin to flower from around Christmas to early January and will last about a week as a cut flower.
