There are more than 900 species of Acacia in Australia, making it the largest genus in the Australian flora. In spring large fluffy golden-yellow flower-heads with up to eight minute sweetly scented flowers provide a vivid contrast with the foliage. The dark brown mature fruit, 7-12cm long, splits along one side to release the seeds. The brilliant yellow, fragrant flowers of Golden Wattle make it a popular garden plant, but tends to be short-lived in cultivation. Acacia pycnantha was proclaimed as the national floral emblem of Australia in 1988, the year of Australia’s bicentenary. In 1992, September 1st was formally declared ‘National Wattle Day’.
